And I will do it on this blog, since it has more followers. I decided to do it after I saw that the Reply option doesn’t give me much space. This post won’t be under a read more, so if you don’t want to see it, blacklist “rantyprongsy”.

I learned that Steven Moffat was getting too much hate through Twitter. This doesn’t surprise me, since I know that the same hating issue happens here as well. For that reason I don’t follow any tags related to Doctor Who or Sherlock, because some fans just sicken me.

Yes, I am aware that “sicken” is a strong word, but so is “hate”. Hate? Really? You HATE Moffat? Did he kill your father or something? And don’t you tell me that you hate him because the death of the Ponds is on the way, because I will punch you through the computer screen. Friendly reminder: They are FICTIONAL characters and sometimes, fictional characters must be removed so that the whole series will PROGRESS! That’s right, progress! Doctor Who is all about change and progress. There were so many companions passing through, even the Doctor himself passed through, well, his many forms at least and it would be absurd if Amy and Rory would just stick around till the Doctor died and the series ended. They have been around for two seasons. That’s quite long, so it’s bye-bye for them.

You will tell me that he’s planning to kill them when he could just let them go away. Really? How? When Amy begs him to return every once in a while? Should he just change her attitude and make her go OFF character? Or should Rory go OFF character and stand up to her? Rory is badass and all, but he cannot defy Amy. Her every decision is law, even the divorce was her decision. There’s no other way for them to leave with that character progression. They MUST die, so we just have to deal with it, suck it up and move on. And if you feel your heart aching, get a muscle relaxer and a painkiller. I have them in my Medic House Kit if you want me to share.

At this point, I want to explain that this is why I admire Moffat. I admire him because he does his job. He is not afraid to strike relentlessly. He is not afraid to make us feel stuff. Feelings, remember? That’s what a writer must be doing. He must be awakening feelings. That’s why I like Neil Gaiman, that’s why I like so many other writers. They make me feel and that’s what I aspire to do. Make my readers feel. Happiness, rage and sadness. So far I am good at it, bless. :D But yeah, he does his job correctly and you HATE him? Bloody strong word, “hate”. Would it be better if he was writing some cliche storylines with no plot twists and turns and more important, without a powerful ending that would make your heart burn? If he was like that, I’d use the word “hate” too, because I truly detest writers that are afraid to maim or seriously injure the most popular characters when needed, I hate those that are afraid to kill (names not said, disrespect not shared). But Moffat isn’t like that and that’s why I like him. I like him because he made me shit bricks with the Weeping Angels, he forced me to go back to the 4th Season because of the way the story line of River Song got developed and after I got there he kicked me in the balls and made me cry literally A FUCKING RIVER (hah pun) and then in Asylum he made me scream at the screen when I found out what Oswin really was and then laugh because she fucking screwed the database. Hackers, love me one. But yeah…

And you hate him because he’s doing his job? You could at least use a different word. “Hate” makes me cringe.

I can’t deal with that shit. Doctor Who is supposed to be a show that takes you to a whole different word. If you shout at the driver, I won’t be surprised if we crash on a tree. So, stop fucking doing it.

Right. After this long winded tweet, I am putting this to bed once and for all. I am now receiving death threats. Some people want to kill me because I stuck up for a friend. Death threats. I mean, really? Are you serious? Some nameless, faceless cowards actually want me to die. What a wonderful world we live in. And all because of this: I don’t think Steven Moffat a misogynist. I don’t think he is a homophobe. What he is, is a thoroughly decent man, who, in my opinion, writes high quality drama that is hugely popular and continues to win awards. In my opinion. What I witnessed the other week was cyber-bullying at its most rampant. Now, I consider myself a feminist. I am the first to champion women and I happen to work in an incredibly male-dominated profession where good, challenging, stand-out women’s roles are still dwarfed by the huge amount of amazing men’s roles. And where women still have to fight to be taken seriously and keep their clothes on. I am also a mother, first and foremost and I juggle those two careers precariously. Women are made to feel guilty for having children, not having children, working for a living, getting married, staying single, usually by other women, I hasten to add. I have been a professional actor for nearly twenty years and in that time I have been on the receiving end of misogynist behaviour more times than you can possibly imagine. I was sticking up for a friend, who, I felt had been bullied. Now, if you don’t like Doctor Who or Sherlock or indeed, any of Steven Moffat’s writing then don’t watch it. If it upsets you to the point of sending him death threats, then don’t watch it. Be constructive, please, of course, I am all for that but when that criticism turns ugly (and I stress, the stuff I read had become incredibly offensive) then constructive criticism goes out the window and it becomes very personal and frightening. Last time I checked, death-threats were not in the least bit constructive. I have recently just tried to stick up for a young actress who was being harangued on Twitter. It amounts to the same thing. Faceless bullying again. And it is in no way constructive. I sincerely apologise if I came across too strong with some of you. Twitter tends to have that effect on people. The internet can be a fantastic place or Hell on earth. My reaction, in hindsight, may have been a knee-jerk reaction. Maybe that’s because I was horrendously bullied as a child and so any sort of injustice and cowardly attack is heightened to me. Or maybe, I was defending a friend who has contributed to British drama more than any one of the people who were cussing him last week. You see, you all have a remote control. You can always switch off. Just an idea…

Everyone needs to read this, regardless if you’re in the Doctor Who fandom, there are a few things here that need to be read really.
